Mark your calendars for the next meeting:  June, 2010 (tentative)

Casual Dress

Message from the chair:

IBM will sponsor our Spring 2010 meeting, and will present updates on the latest releases DB2 V9 for z/OS and DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows.  We are once again fortunate to have great support being provided by IBM.  Due to this strong support, we are able to offer this meeting free of charge.  Be sure to take special note that this meeting will be held at IBM’s facilities in West Chester, PA.

We are proud and happy to have Roger Miller back as our keynote speaker.  Roger, from the Silicone Valley Labs, has more than a quarter century of experience working on DB2 development, product design and strategy - and will be sharing his excitement with the new features and capabilities coming with DB2 10 for z/OS.  His presentations are always very informative and he adds a lot of real world Customer experience stories that he can share with us.  The meetings where Roger is presenting are always very well attended so be sure to register early to reserve your seat.

Our DB2 UDB speaker, John Hornibrook, from the IBM UDB Labs in Canada has been with DB2 for many years also and is currently the Manager, Query Optimization Development DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows.

Please join us for a very informative day and get a great start on the weekend with an early Friday dismissal to enjoy what will hopefully be great early Spring weather!  REMINDER:  PRE-REGISTRATION IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED!!  In an effort to better plan for handouts and food, we are urging the membership to please try to pre-register for our sessions.

First Morning Presentation

DB2 10 for z/OS

Roger Miller, IBM Corp.

DB2 10 for z/OS provides the best reduction in CPU for transactions and batch for 22 years, since V2R1. We expect most customers to reduce CPU times between 5% and 10% initially, with opportunity for more.  Applications which can take advantage of additional benefits, such as hash access, can have larger CPU and memory reductions. Scalability is the second major benefit, with the ability to run five to ten times as many threads in a single subsystem by moving 80% to 90% of the virtual storage above the bar. Schema evolution or data definition on demand enhancements improves availability. SQL, pureXML, and web services extend usability and application portability for this platform.

Productivity improvements for application developers and for database administrators are very important as data grows in scale and complexity.  Warehousing continues to evolve, with key trends matching System z and DB2 for z/OS strengths of performance, scalability, reliability, stability, availability, resilience, and security.   DB2 10 has a lot for everyone. Your organization needs to lower operating costs thru CPU cycle reductions while still building a strong foundation for SOA and XML initiatives. Database Administrators (DBAs) will find improved database performance, scalability, and availability. Memory management is dramatically reduced, so growth is much simpler. DBAs also get more flexible security to help with regulatory compliance. A wide range of enhancements improve ERP application and data warehouse functionality and performance. Large object (LOB) performance and flexibility are improved. Many DBA tasks are simplified.

Speaker:

Roger Miller has worked more than a quarter century on DB2 development, product design and strategy. He often helps customers to use the product, answers many questions and presents frequently to user groups. He was a customer for ten years before working on many facets of DB2, ranging from overall design issues to SQL, languages, install, security, audit, standards, performance, concurrency, and availability. We sometimes call him a jack of all DB2 trades and a master of several. His favorite response is, “It depends.”

Second Morning Presentation

DB2 for z/OS Selected Performance Topics

Roger Miller, IBM Corp.

This talk presents some of the latest challenges and achievements for DB2 performance, noting some recent measurements and what can be achieved with the latest software and the latest hardware.  The discussion will be centered on what you can do to help improve performance in your shop, particularly on the items that can help in DB2 10.  Objectives:  The first part of this presentation is system performance, looking at the subsystem and overall system, covering the aspects of objectives, metrics, managing, resources, tuning and System z. The second part is application performance, with sections for tuning, SQL, languages, utilities, environment, database design, and application design. We'll finish with pointers to many other sources and resources, providing a detailed roadmap of where to look for more information.

Afternoon Presentation 1

DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows Query Tuning Best Practices

John Hornibrook, IBM Toronto Lab

Query performance is not a one-time consideration. It should be considered throughout the design, development, and production phases of the application development life cycle. SQL is a very flexible language, which means that there are many ways to get the same correct result.  This flexibility also means that some queries are better than others in taking advantage of the DB2 data server optimizer's strengths.

This presentation covers the best practices for writing and tuning queries to best leverage the DB2 data server's strengths. It will provide guidance for writing efficient SQL statements as well as configuring DB2 to ensure the optimizer is running at peak performance.  It will also provide tips on using the explain facility to monitor and react to access plan problems.

Speaker:

John Hornibrook is a senior technical staff member and development manager for DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows query optimization, which includes statistics collection, the explain facility, and the design advisor. He has been a DB2 developer for 19 years, focusing on the SQL compiler and relational data services components.

Afternoon Presentation 2

DB2 9.7 for Linux, UNIX and Windows Optimizer Update

A number of changes were made to the DB2 data server's query optimizer in V9.7 and V9.7 FP1 to improve access plan selection, access plan stability and to support new functionality such as partitioned indexes.  The explain facility was also extended to support explaining captured access sections and to report the actual number of rows processed by each access plan operator at query execution time. This presentation will provide an overview of all significant changes made to the query optimizer and its associated components in DB2 9.7.
