Our sponsor this meeting will be Computer Associates, and they will be sending one of their Senior Consultants, Greg Parrish, who is no stranger to the User Groups around the country. Greg will be presenting an interesting exploitation of a new Version 9 feature, “clone tables”, and another topic that is always of interest, exploiting the DB2 Logs. IBM will also help us in rounding out the agenda. One of our IBM liaisons and IBM Senior IT specialist, Howie Hirsch will provide us with a Version 9 highlights/features presentation to keep us up to date on the topic as we start/continue moving toward V9
Please join us for a very informative day and get a great
start on the weekend with an early Friday dismissal to enjoy the cool Fall

First Morning Presentation
What do Clones do on Mother's Day?
Greg Parrish, CA Inc., Sr.
Consultant, Technical Sales
An Overview of the Strange
In previous releases of DB2,
users expressed the need for a functionality that is similar to an online LOAD
REPLACE utility. Introduced in DB2 9, clone table support provides users
with the ability to generate a table with the exact same attributes as a table
that already exists in the current DB2 subsystem. The clone is created
within the same universal table space as the base table, and is structurally
identical to the base table in every way. Once created, a clone table can
be manipulated independently of the base table, and you can exchange data
between the base table and the clone table. Clone tables thus provide the
functional equivalent of an online LOAD REPLACE utility, allowing users to, for
example, reload table data multiple times a day while still being able to
access the existing data with read-only operations. This presentation
will examine the new clone table feature, discussing concepts, advantages,
commands and restrictions (including the new UTS table space type).
Speaker:
Greg is a Senior Consultant
with CA, where he presents and demonstrates CA DB2 technology, installs and
implements CA DB2 products at customer sites, provides technical consulting and
training on DB2 for z/OS, and develops & presents technical overviews
on various DB2 topics. Greg has presented at IDUG and several DB2
RUGs. Greg started out in data processing in 1981 as a mainframe computer
operator in the US Army. Over the years he has worked in several areas of
IT, including operations analysis, production control, systems storage &
analysis, and database design & analysis. Greg earned a BS from CSU
Sacramento in 1989. He lives in
Second Morning Presentation
Harnessing the Power of DB2 Logs
Greg Parrish, CA Inc., Sr.
Consultant, Technical Sales
The log is a vital part of
DB2 and DB2 recovery. However, once you start to exploit the content and
what the log holds, many day to day tasks can be changed for the better for
everyone. This presentation will look into real life scenarios how DB2 sites are squeezing the most out of the log to manage audit control, application recovery, change propagation, application QA and assisting
in disaster scenarios.
Afternoon Presentation
DB2 Version 9 Highlights
Howie Hirsch, IBM
This presentation will
center on many of the exciting new features of DB2 version 9. There are many
features that will improve the lives of our DBAs and application developers,
new SQL, native SQL stored procedures, index improvements, utility
improvements, clone table and many more.
Speaker:
Howie Hirsch is a Senior IT
specialist for IBM for the last 2 and a half years. His job is to assist
customers with all aspects of DB2 for z/OS, focusing on release level
migrations. Last year he was part of the
team that wrote the redbook, Packages:Revisted. Previously, he was an applications area DB2
DBA for 20 years at Horizon Blue Cross in
