Morning Presentation

DB2 9 XML Support: What Can It Do For You?

Gregg Lippa, Themis Inc.

DB2 had begun to incorporate XML features prior to DB2 9, but has now become a real leader in XML support. This presentation reviews the basics of XML and XPath expressions, discusses the benefits and uses of XML in a DB2 database, and covers the XML-related features of DB2 9 in detail, including the new XML data type and the DB2 functions that support it, how it is supported in COBOL and Java programming environments, its impact on indexing, and an overview of its support for validation. If you are considering using XML in your DB2 environment, this session will give you an understanding of the potential benefits and pitfalls and a great jumpstart to understanding what is available in DB2.

Speaker:

Gregg Lippa is currently a Senior Technical Advisor at Themis Inc. He teaches DB2-related courses on SQL, Application Programming, and optimization, performance and tuning as well as Java, J2EE, distributed computing and Java-related topics. Gregg has worked with DB2 as a consultant and trainer for over 20 years and with Java for 10 years.

Afternoon Presentation

SQL Optimization & Access Paths: What’s Old & New

David Simpson, Themis Inc.

Some things with SQL optimization have been the same for a long time. Others change are changing rapidly with the introduction of Version 8 and 9. This presentation reviews the basics of access path analysis with extended discussion of what’s new in the latest releases of DB2. The appropriate place for Visual Explain and Optimization Service Center will also be covered. Let’s talk about what’s old, what’s new and how to make the optimizer work for you.

Speaker:

David Simpson is currently a Senior Technical Advisor at Themis Inc. He teaches courses on SQL, Application Programming, DB2 Administration as well as optimization, performance and tuning. He has supported transactional systems that use DB2 for z/OS databases in excess of 10 terabytes. David has worked with DB2 for 15 years as an application programmer, DBA and technical instructor. David is a certified DB2 DBA on both z/OS and LUW. David was voted Best User Speaker and Best Overall Speaker at IDUG North America 2006. He was also voted Best User Speaker at IDUG Europe 2006.
