DB2: Guilty Until Proven Innocent
Hugh Lococo, Compuware Corporation
Is there any defense to the presumption of guilt? In today's multi-tiered 'transaction', root cause analysis is an art, and DB2 is a target. DDF, Stored Procedures, and DB2 Connect all create challenges, which contributes to this problem.
This presentation will address a multi-tiered environment and demonstrate not only alert capabilities, but also root cause analysis--so that you can avoid an issue before it becomes a problem.
Learn how to:
v Understand the origination of non-DB2 problems.
v Identify high-volume events, especially within a short period of time.
v Get insight and direction to performance problems
v Be proactive in identifying problems by receiving alerts based on thresholds, including performance.
v Build quality into applications.
This will provide 'assurance' to the DBA that the 'Court of Assumptions' will not bestow a guilty verdict again.
Speaker:
Hugh Lococo has 30 years of experience in the IT industry. He has spent eight years as a DBA in DB2 and IMS and 14 years as an IT consultant. For the past 12 years, Hugh has worked at Compuware Corporation. His current role is that of a senior consultant in which he works with customers to help them achieve maximum value from their mainframe software investment.
Performance for SOA Java DB2 Applications
David Beulke - Pragmatic Solutions, Inc.
In the Performance for SOA Java DB2 Applications session the application DBA and developer learn the common SOA Java performance pitfalls and how to avoid them. This session takes the attendee through the application architecture and discusses the Java application pattern choices.
The session class highlights the common pitfalls and how to avoid performance problems related to Java sessions, messages and application persistence issues. The session also highlights the best practices for database connections, SQL access and error checking within a high performance environment. Discussing these areas along with common Java JSP and servlet programming traps and debugging can help your application developers improve your application scalability and overall performance significantly.
Speaker:
Dave Beulke is President of Pragmatic Solutions, Inc. a firm specializing in DB2 Performance Tuning and Education. He performs system and performance reviews for many clients and is an internationally recognized DB2 consultant, author and lecturer. He is known for his extensive expertise in system and database performance, data warehouses and internet applications. He is currently a member of the IBM DB2 Gold Consultant program, co-author of the IBM V8 and V7 z/OS DB2 Certification exams, co-author of the Business Intelligence Certification exam, past president of the International DB2 Users Group (IDUG), columnist for DB2 Magazine, former instructor for The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI), and former editor of the IDUG Solutions Journal. He has helped clients with system and application issues on the mainframe, UNIX and Windows environments and has over 20 years experience in numerous industries and can be reached at DaveBeulke@cs.com.
Who killed my DB2?!
Ivan L. Gelb, Gelb Information Systems Corp.
Insuring optimum DB2 service levels in z/OS environments is challenging due to dependencies between many subsystems. Performance biases introduced by tuning can affect the complex’s service levels and total effective capacity. This presentation describes how to avoid wasting time on DB2 tuning projects by insuring that interdependent areas of z/OS, CICS, and DB2 are optimized. Attendees will learn how to avoid being caught in unproductive finger pointing sessions by insuring that subsystems are tuned with proper bias, and by monitoring overall, rather than just DB2, performance metrics that indicate the likely degradation causes.
Speaker:
Ivan L. Gelb has been involved with on-line systems and applications as part of his extensive hands-on experience with mainframe, client/server and all types of Web-based environments. His technical and management background includes (a) determination of hardware and software requirements for high-performance and high-availability systems; (b) effectiveness evaluations and optimization of computer systems performance; (c) data base and data communications systems design, implementation, and performance improvements; and (d) capacity requirements forecasting and development of proprietary analysis techniques and software packages.
