Mark your calendars for the next meeting:

June 9th, 2006

REMEMBER CASUAL DRESS

Message from the chair:

Quest Software and DVDUG will co-sponsor the March meeting, and present some great sessions on cross-platform topics.  Quest provides tools and guidance in the area of helping DBA’s manage all the different platforms and types of databases that exist in our shops today.  Quest will start the day off with a presentation that focuses in on comparing the key architectural and administrative differences that a DBA will find essential in order to effectively manage these platforms.

Along with Quest this time will be two great speakers that have presented many times on the DB2 circuit including IDUG and the DB2 Tech Conference.  David Beulke will present the latest Data Warehouse features across the DB2 platforms, and Larry Kintisch will present some great guidelines for DB2 index design and creation.  David is an IBM Gold Consultant - DB2, an IBM Certified Solutions Expert (DB2 Database Administration, Business Intelligence), Past President - International DB2 Users Group, and Vice President - Washington Area Informix DB2 Users Group.  Larry’s teaches many DB2 courses around the country and this session is an excerpt from one of those courses.  Larry will be teaching the entire course the following week, March 27th - March 29th.  Please see his web site (www.DBIndexDesign.com) for further details.

IBM will also be on hand at the meeting to provide our membership with a quick synopsis on the latest updates on DB2 and associated products.  Please join us for a very informative day that will help build your DB2 skills, and help you get the best performance possible out of your DB2 applications.  See you at Dave & Busters!

REMINDER:  PRE-REGISTRATION IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED!!  In an effort to better plan for handouts and food, we are urging the membership to please try and pre-register for our sessions.  See you at Dave & Busters!

See you at Dave & Busters!

Meeting Overview

Crossing Over/Breaking DB2 Platform Barrier

Rich Wolfson, Quest Software

The popularity of DB2 UDB running on distributed platforms continues to grow. The sudden growth and popularity of DB2 on these platforms has resulted in a shortage of experienced non-mainframe DB2 DBAs. IT departments today have to deal with tightening budgets and shrinking staffs.  The luxury of being a single platform DBA is becoming a thing of the past. Many DB2 mainframe DBAs find themselves supporting DB2 on these distributed platforms, resulting in a huge learning curve.  It is essential for the DB2 DBA of the new millennium to be well versed on running DB2 on multiple platforms. This presentation focuses in on comparing the key architectural and administrative differences that a DBA will find essential in order to effectively manage these platforms.

Speaker:

Rich Wolfson is currently a Senior Systems Consultant for DB2 products at Quest Software.  Rich has been an IT professional since 1983.  He has worked with DB2 since 1989 and has held many roles including Programmer, Project Leader and DBA.  Rich has worked as a DB2 consultant the last 13 years prior to joining Quest and currently helps customers realize the full potential of Quest solutions in their DB2 mainframe and Linux/UNIX/Windows environments.

DB2 Data Warehouse Performance

David Beulke - Pragmatic Solutions, Inc.

In DB2 V8 for z/OS and LUW there are many new unique data warehouse design features missing from other DBMSs. Learn how to leverage these new features in your designs and additional performance details about Multi-Dimensional Clustering (MDCs),

Materialized Query Tables (MQTs), and partitioning options. Through this presentation you will learn about the latest DB2 DW features and the best data warehouse design techniques.

Speaker:

Dave Beulke is President of Pragmatic Solutions, Inc. a firm specializing in DB2 Performance Tuning and Education.  He performs system and performance reviews for many clients and is an internationally recognized DB2 consultant, author and lecturer. He is known for his extensive expertise in system and database performance, data warehouses and internet applications.  He is currently a member of the IBM DB2 Gold Consultant program, co-author of the IBM V8 and V7 z/OS DB2 Certification exams, co-author of the Business Intelligence Certification exam, past president of the International DB2 Users Group (IDUG), columnist for DB2 Magazine, former instructor for The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI), and former editor of the IDUG Solutions Journal.  He has helped clients with system and application issues on the mainframe, UNIX and Windows environments and has over 20 years experience in numerous industries and can be reached at DaveBeulke@cs.com

Index Design for the Busy DB2 System

Larry Kintisch, ABLE Information Services

Many DBA's have guidelines for DB2 Index Design that are (1) out of date, (2) simplistic, and (3) rule-based rather than analysis-based.  As hardware has changed in the past decade, old guidelines no longer apply.  Simple estimations of average response time become meaningless in an overloaded system, and knowledge of Queuing Theory is a must.  Applying a set of rules to design an index requires that the DBA do further work: an analysis of the likely join sequence and methods, predicate filter factors for the worst case and the timing of alternatives in a busy system.  Many shops outsource their data centers and pay dearly for the extra CPU costs due to poor index designs.  All physical designs involve trade-offs between equipment costs and response time.  This 90-minute presentation covers a few of the statistical methods that help the DBA "sell" better index designs to his or her management.  It is based on Tapio Lahdenmaki's course and textbook, and Larry Kintisch will show a few examples of when "the average case" is not good enough, so that a bit of applied statistics is needed.

Speaker:

Larry Kintisch, MS, CDP, CSP, is a former IBM Systems Engineer, a programmer,
systems analyst and database consultant. He has been teaching SQL, QMF and DB2 for IBM
and others since 1984. As an IBM contractor he trains customers at IBM sites and
IBM Business Partner sites throughout the USA.

IBM courses include SQL and QMF workshops; DB2 UDB for z/OS introduction, programming,
administration and tuning classes; and a relational database design course.

Over the past twenty-two years Larry has presented over a dozen seminars and workshops
for professional associations in five cities covering SQL, DB2, Data Modeling and Index Design.
