REMEMBER CASUAL DRESS

Message from the chair:

Compuware will sponsor our June session, and will present some great performance related topics that will help you meet the many challenges in everyday DB2 performance tuning.  Compuware provides tools that help aid in
performance analysis and tuning, and they will provide us with general presentation sessions that lay the groundwork for helping DBA's in the area of performance, and will provide lunchtime demos of their tools that assist
with DB2 performance also.

Our keynote speaker this time is again no stranger in the DB2 world or to our Del Val DB2 User Group.  Sheryl Larsen will return with a great performance related presentation also, "Top Application Impacts on DB2 UDB
Performance".  Sheryl is a great presenter and her presentations are always packed with solid information and examples that you can take back to work and put to use immediately.

Please join us for a very informative day that will help build your performance and tuning skills, and help you get the best performance possible out of your DB2 applications.

See you at Dave & Busters!

Keynote (9:00)

Morning Session (9:15)

Top Application Impacts on DB2 UDB Performance

Sheryl M. Larson, Sheryl M. Larsen, Inc.

The past twenty years of DB2 UDB has offered us many ways to architect an application. SOA, web services, and the like have changed our thinking, but has performance improved? Come find out what DB2 UDB features impact response time, throughput, peak response time, hits, and sessions per second for the better and for the worse. You’ll have to come to the presentation to get the coveted list.

Speaker: Sheryl M. Larsen is president and founder of Sheryl M. Larsen, Inc. (www.smlsql.com), a firm specializing in Advanced DB2 Consulting and Education. She is an internationally recognized researcher, consultant and lecturer, specializing in DB2 and is known for her extensive expertise in SQL. Sheryl has over 20 years experience in DB2, has published many articles, several popular DB2 posters, and co-authored a book, DB2 Answers, Osborne-McGraw-Hill, 1999. She was selected as a keynote speaker for the IDUG Asia Pacific 2002 Conference and is frequently asked to keynote DB2 tool vendor's world wide events. She was voted into the IDUG "Speaker Hall of Fame" in 2001 and was the Executive Editor of the IDUG Solutions Journal magazine 1997-2000.  Currently, she is President of the Midwest Database Users Group (www.mwdug.org), and a member of IBM's DB2 Gold Consultants program.

Morning Session (10:45)

DB2 Application Performance Management in the 21st Century

Craig Hodgins, Compuware Corporation

The performance of your DB2 applications are just as important, if not more so, than the performance of your DB2 subsystem. This presentation will illustrate why we need to tune applications, especially those running under DB2, with a focus on SQL performance. Topics will also include general DB2 performance issues and specific DB2 V8 performance issues.

Speaker: Craig Hodgins has worked in various capacities in the IT industry for over 23 years, 18.5 years with IBM Canada and 5 years with Compuware Corporation. Craig is currently a STROBE Systems Engineer. He believes the most interesting and fun work is in performance management. Craig spoke at CMG 2002 in Reno and at CMG 2003 in Dallas. His paper, "ZEN AND THE ART OF APPLICATION PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT", was voted Best Paper at CMG 2003. In addition, Craig has had two articles published in Enterprise Systems Journal. In his spare time Craig volunteers as an auxiliary police officer with the Ontario Provincial Police.

Afternoon Session (01:45)

Performance Improvements from the

"Things I Wish They'd Told Me 8 Years Ago" - Visualized

Tom Halinski, Compuware Corporation

Pearls of wisdom for application performance improvements using DB2 sound good and make a lot of sense.  But how do we know how well they work and to what extent?  This session will take some of the performance tips from Bonnie Baker, a DB2 industry expert, and measure them using STROBE.  It will explain the theory and show the actual before and after results of implementing tips like: synchronous vs. asynchronous I/O, index usage and stage 1 vs. stage 2 predicates.  After “seeing” the actual performance improvements, IT personnel will be much more confident that theory and reality can go hand in hand.

Speaker: Thomas Halinski is a Systems Engineer for Compuware Corporation.  He supports the Sales Team for the Application Performance Management (APM) software product STROBE, conducting pre-sales demonstrations, Proof of Concepts (POC s) and training.  During the past 25+ years, he has worked as a Business Application Consultant for various industries with duties ranging from Enterprise Application Design to roll-up-your-sleeves program development and coding.  He has worked in the MVS performance tuning software industry for the past several years, with an emphasis in DB2.
