Keynote (9:00)

Morning Session (9:15)

System Tuning - Do you know where you are going?

Joel Goldstein , Responsive Systems Company

DB2 systems have become more complex over the years, with more tuning options, and more performance indicators. Which thresholds and counters indicate performance problems, and how do they relate to the other performance information?

Come learn about the various pain thresholds, and what you can do to make your system run better. Every system has problems, it's just a measure of magnitude....

Speaker:

Joel has four decades of data processing experience, and is an internationally acknowledged DB2 performance expert, consultant, and lecturer. His technical background includes application development, database administration, systems programming, performance tuning, capacity planning, and modeling online database systems. He has more than 18 years of experience addressing DB2 design, performance, and capacity planning issues of many large DB2 systems and applications. He is a frequent speaker at DB2 user groups and Computer Measurement Group meetings throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East. In addition to publishing dozens of articles on DB2 and other performance issues, he is also a technical editor for Z/Journal, and was the Database editor for CMG Transactions. Joel is a Director of TRIDEX, served on the CMG national program committee for fifteen years, and is a past IDUG BOD member. He consults to many national and international clients, and has taught DB2 Performance and Tuning seminars throughout the world. He is President of Responsive Systems, a consulting and software company located in Morganville, NJ.

Morning Session (10:45)

Recursive SQL for Dummies

BL "Tink" Tysor , Bayard Lee Tysor, Inc.

Recursive SQL, now available on DB2 UDB for z/OS, is a powerful construct used to solve many business problems. These problems previously required solutions using application logic executing many SQL statements. The basics concepts of successful recursive processing are used to explain recursive SQL. Business problems requiring recursive SQL will be explained, and how it out performs the equivalent application logic.

Speaker:

BL “Tink” Tysor, an experienced Database Administrator, SQL developer and Relational Data Modeler with over 34 years of computer experience, has concentrated on DB2 Universal Database for z/OS & OS/390 since 1994, and has been involved in every aspect of Database Management from Conceptual, Logical and Physical Data Modeling, database creation and maintenance, SQL generation and reviews, through performance tuning and data recovery. Tink has taught all levels of DB2 classes, and is on the IDUG Solution’s Journal Editorial Review Board. He has spoken at the NA and EU IDUG Conferences, RJGs, and authored publications on DB2.

Product Demo (1:00)

Afternoon Session (01:45)

DB2 UDB Application Development in a Windows World
